One day, a Maharani lost her necklace. The necklace was made up of gold, diamonds and other precious stones. The necklace was very valuable and it was coming from the past seven generations of the Maharaja. The King and Queen were worried about the loss of the necklace

The Maharaja and his courtiers knew that only the guards who were there for the security of the Maharani or servants of the Maharani could be responsible for the loss.

So the King called his eight Ministers and told them about the missing necklace and its value and asked them to find a way to catch the thief, offering a reward of 1,000 gold coins.

Tenali Rama, one of the Ministers, stood up and said “Maharaja, please give me a chance. One of my friends is a very great magician and I am sure he can solve the problem”. The King said “Please proceed; if your friend can catch the thief I will reward you with 500 gold coins each”.

Tenali Rama went home and called his friend secretly. The next day they both went to the Palace.

Tenali Rama said to the King and other courtiers, ' Sir, here is my friend who is a great magician of the Asia; I am proud to have such a great friend and I am sure that he will catch the thief and bring out the necklace for you “.

All the people were curious as to how the magician would catch the thief. The magician commanded, 'Please call all the servants including male and female servants who are working at the Queen's palace.' All the servants were assembled. Then the magician said 'Maharaja, I have some magic sticks with me; each stick is 15 inches long. Now I am going to distribute these sticks to all your servants--one stick for each servant. Please ask all of them to put the magic sticks inside their pillow when sleeping tonight and let them bring back the sticks tomorrow and submit to me. With the power of my magic the stick with the thief will increase its length by 5 inches, and please note that the stick length will not increase for those who were not involved in the theft of the necklace. In this way the thief will be identified and can be punished.' The sticks were distributed to the servants -- one for each.

So all the servants were provided with a big hall for that night to sleep; all kept the sticks in their pillow and slept. But the  security guard of the Maharani palace called “Chinnappa” had stolen the necklace and he was unable to sleep comfortably in the hall because he was fearing being caught by the magician the next day. At last he thought of an idea -------

Next day Tenali Rama and his friend, the Magician came very early to the hall and started collecting the sticks by standing at the door of the hall, and caught Chinnappa.

They took him to the king’s custody and said 'Sir, here is the thief!' Chinnappa confessed that he had stolen the necklace.

Curiously, the King asked the Magician '--Can you just show me the sticks, please? I want to check how Chinnappa's stick has grown?' The Magician replied, 'I'm sorry, Maharaja -- I am not a magician. And the sticks given by me are not magic sticks. Actually those sticks cannot identify the thief and cannot grow on their own. I knew that the thief would try to adjust the stick by assuming it will grow---We found his stick to be 5 inches shorter than the others----'

It was with Foxy Resident in mind that I made the enquiry, really and not for myself. I just thought that as it was Foxy's first post he or she just may be a newcomer to the village and may not know many people to be able to start up a book club.
